MOMA couple admiring the color black
I was in New York City recently with my wife, and we visited the MOMA with a friend. We had just been joking about some of the art (see Gabriel Orozco’s shoebox on a floor) when I came upon this couple. This photo is ripe for adding one’s own caption. When I see it, I imagine the guy saying, “Yup, that’s really black!” Feel free to add your own in the comments.

“Right there–no–right there. Don’t you see it? It’s a spot of not-quite-so-black.”

Is this like International Klein Black?

Just how black is it?

I think Claudia is the current leader for best caption. Not only is it funny, but she unknowingly (or perhaps knowingly) alludes to the method of the painter. This painting is called “Abstract Painting” by Ad Reinhardt. He created several shades of black, and tinted the corners red. I saw it in person, and it’s hard to see the nuance. That’s why this couple is concentrating so hard. You can read more here: http://www.moma.org/collection/object.php?object_id=78976
